After leaving the military, one of the things I missed most was being active and being part of a team.
I was eventually invited to learn how to play hockey. At the time, I had already been through injuries, surgeries, and physical limitations that made the idea of playing hockey seem almost ridiculous. My hip alone gave me plenty of reasons to say no.
But I tried it.
I went through a three-day Learn to Play program, and something happened when I got on the ice.
For that time, I wasn't thinking about finances. I wasn't thinking about my relationship, my kids, my car, my job, or everything else happening in life.
I was thinking about hockey.
I was thinking about my team. I was thinking about what I needed to do and how I could help the person next to me succeed.
The adrenaline went up. The pain faded into the background. I got a hell of a workout, but more importantly, my mind was free.
That is difficult to explain to someone who has never needed that kind of escape.
Hockey saved my life.
That is why OC Warrior Hockey exists.
My goal is to give another veteran the opportunity to discover what hockey can do for theirs.
